9 out of 10 women with intellectual/developmental disability (IDD) will experience sexual violence

Rape Crisis Center of Robeson County's office with director Virginia LocklearIncreasing sexual health equity and reducing sexual violence within the IDD community requires community partnerships. This community partnership with the Rape Crisis Center of Robeson County (RCCRC) is developing a comprehensive sexual health education curriculum that is accessible and inclusive of students with IDD. They will also create a companion guide for educators for use by RCCRC community and public school educators as well as a training program to facilitate adoption of the curriculum.

In addition, the partnership is developing a training program for sexual assault response teams on how best to support survivors with IDD. Both trainings will be advertised and offered for free to community stakeholders: self advocates, family advocates, SART members, healthcare providers, law enforcement, educators, advocacy organizations, etc. We anticipate an increased capacity to provide preventive education, equitable sexual health care, and greater awareness of the need for continued efforts to address this epidemic of sexual violence in the IDD community across the state.

Working together, we can stop the epidemic of sexual violence and increase sexual health equity within the IDD community.

Proposed Aims:

  • Increase awareness about sexual violence in the IDD community and need for systemic change
  • Increase accessible and equitable sexual health education for individuals with IDD
  • Increase knowledge, skills, and comfort level of the Rape Crisis Center of Robeson County
